Demantoid: High-Dispersion Green Garnet

Uniqueness of Green Color and Sparkling Fire Demantoid is a green gemstone variety of andradite in the garnet group, found in colors ranging from yellowish-green to deep green. Its primary distinguishing feature is a high dispersion value, enabling faceted gems to display distinct multicolored fire when body color, transparency, and cut proportions allow light to travel properly within the stone.

Differences Between Demantoid and Other Green Garnets Although some demantoids and tsavorites share similar green hues, they are distinct mineral species. Demantoid is an andradite or calcium-iron garnet, whereas tsavorite is a grossular or calcium-aluminum garnet. These compositional differences result in distinct refractive index, dispersion, specific gravity, and hardness values for the two gemstones.

The name “demantoid” refers to its diamond-like appearance, referencing the luster and fire of this gem. However, the visible fire also depends on the body color, clarity, cutting proportions, gem size, and lighting conditions, rather than dispersion alone.
