Most gemstones are safe with mild soapy water and a soft cloth, but a few groups need different handling.
Clean with a damp soft cloth only. Keep away from jewellery cleaning solutions, solvents and acids — even a weak acid such as lemon juice can attack the glass. Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner. If the stone is to be mounted, ask your jeweller to set it last, after all metalwork is finished.
Amber (2-2.5 Mohs), lapis lazuli (5-5.5), moonstone, tanzanite, kunzite and labradorite (6-7). These chip more easily and some are sensitive to heat. Store them in a separate compartment from harder stones and avoid ultrasonic cleaners.
Ruby, blue sapphire, yellow sapphire and sapphire in every colour are 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond, and stand up well to daily wear — except lead-glass filled stones, which belong to the first group above.
