Yellow Sapphire

Yellow sapphire occurs in shades ranging from pale yellow and vivid yellow to greenish yellow and orange-yellow. Each stone may differ in color intensity, brightness, color consistency, transparency, and internal features, giving it a character and beauty of its own.

Mineralogically, yellow sapphire belongs to the corundum family, the same mineral family as ruby and blue sapphire. Its chemical formula is Al₂O₃. The yellow color may result from iron in the crystal structure or from color centers associated with iron. Determining the cause of color in an individual stone requires gemological analysis.

Beyond the beauty of its many shades, yellow sapphire offers a fascinating story that encompasses the causes of its color, geographic origins, internal features, cutting, treatments, and documented cultural beliefs.
