Mali Garnet: The High-Dispersion Yellowish-Green Garnet

A Unique Palette Positioned Between Green, Yellow, and Brown Mali garnet is the trade name for gem-quality garnet originating from the West African nation of Mali, possessing an intermediate composition between grossular and andradite. Its natural color spectrum spans from yellowish-green, greenish-yellow, and golden yellow to brownish-orange, with deep green specimens occurring much less frequently than other hues.

Brilliance and Light Return from a Hybrid Composition Most Mali garnets feature grossular as their primary component combined with varying proportions of andradite. Consequently, physical properties such as refractive index, specific gravity, and dispersion vary according to this chemical mix. Lighter-toned, well-proportioned gemstones in particular can exhibit striking brightness and vivid fire (dispersion).

The term "Mali Garnet" is a commercial trade name referencing its country of origin rather than a new mineral species. In gemological reports, this gemstone group may be identified as grossular-andradite, while "grandite" serves as a shorthand designation for garnets within the compositional range between grossular and andradite.
