Rhodolite: The Purplish-Red Garnet

The Allure of Hues Between Red, Pink, and Purple Rhodolite is a garnet distinguished by its purplish-red, purplish-pink, or pinkish-red hues. The color of each individual gemstone displays a distinct personality and dimension depending on its specific hue, tone (degree of lightness or darkness), color saturation, and the lighting conditions under which it is observed.

A Balance Between Depth and Vibrancy The charm of rhodolite stems from the harmony between the depth of red and the softening purplish or pinkish undertones that brighten its overall appearance. This color balance sets rhodolite apart from typical deep red garnets.

The term “rhodolite” is not the name of a new mineral species with a fixed chemical formula, but rather a gemological trade name for garnets within the pyrope–almandine series that exhibit colors within a specific range. Understanding its composition, color, and gemological values together is far more important than judging it by its trade name alone.
